RST 336 - Hindus and Muslims

Description
This course will introduce students to the religious, legal, and political history and present of South Asia (the Indian sub-continent) by exploring the diversity of encounters between its two most populous religious communities: Hindus and Muslims. While critiquing nationalist histories that look at the relationship between these communities through the prism of either conflict or friendship, this course will develop a more nuanced picture of the critical traditions and moments of intra-religious and inter-religious discourses and debates that have shaped Hindu-Muslim relations in the last several centuries.
