PHI 238 - Bad Language: Meaning and Use Description Language allows for a cooperative exchange of information. But, as we all know, cooperation is an ideal that is often not met. There is also much more to language than asking and answering questions. Our class will investigate language that doesn’t fall into the “cooperative exchange of information” model. Topics include lies, bullshit, slurs, pejoratives, lexical effects, stereotypes, presupposition, linguistic oppression, silencing, consent, and testimony. Credits: 1
