PHI 233 - Philosophy of Psychiatry Description This course will survey the philosophical foundations of modern psychiatry. We will study how core concepts such as mind, soul, person, self, consciousness, and memory shape the field. We will also look at some cultural and historical influences and examine questions regarding classification, categorization, evidence and scientific explanation in contemporary psychiatry. Finally, we will investigate the phenomenology of certain themes in the experience of mental illness, including temporality, ipseity, affectivity, and embodiment. Credits: 1
