JST 251 - Gender and Religion Description How do different religious traditions define and enforce gender identities and sexuality norms? Students will read primary religious source texts as well as writings by historians, anthropologists, and feminist theologians. We will examine the ways that various religious traditions (including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Native American religions) have both constructed and resisted hetero-patriarchal dominance, gendering the human body through text and ritual. Students will get to design their own creative independent project at the end of the course. Same as RST/WGS 251 . Credits: 1
