CNX 145 - Rights & Representations Description Do words and images injure people? This question has created legal and political controversies in the United States for over 100 years. With a particular focus on race and gender, this seminar explores this core question from several perspectives, including legal studies and history, as well as feminist and critical race theory. This class focuses on how social groups-on the left and right in American politics– have tried to use the law to suppress “harmful” expression. This course connects several case studies: pornography, racial epithets sexual harassment, and hate speech on campus. Credits: 1
