CNX 171 - Power to the People

Description
Many observers think that democracy is broken. One response has been to create new forms of participation for people to get involved in local and national politics. Thus, there is an effort to revive participatory democracy - the form of decision-making used in many original indigenous communities as well as Ancient Greece - around the world in order to strengthen democracy. This class explores the revival of participatory democracy and asks if these efforts can truly empower citizens. In doing so, students will also practice skills that are valued in the academic setting: critical reading, purposeful writing, active listening and discussion.
