CNX 162 - Business, Crisis, & COVID-19

Description
What is the public good when public health butts up against public wealth? As the global economy shutters to fight the coronavirus, from the proverbial Main street to transnational companies, business responds to the unprecedented economic conditions in multiple ways. Some industries are deemed essential and thrive. Others are deemed nonessential and result in the bolting of retail malls to the cancelation of scheduled abortions or the suspension of environmental practices, and the loss of 26 million jobs. COVID-19 is an intractable crisis, one that can be anticipated sufficiently but for which interference is almost impossible due to the system attributes. In this course, we will emphasize the intersection between business and society: reactions, adaptations, innovations, and morality. The course will further develop students’ abilities to critically think, write, and effectively present their ideas.
