CNX 157 - What is Genre? Description An exploration of three popular film genres: the musical, the horror film, and the western. The course considers film genre formulas and deviations in film genre in order to understand how genre works. We will examine these films as carefully constructed cultural documents that have the potential to influence viewers’ ideas, values, and attitudes about social norms and questions of identity. We will also explore a range of genres of film writing, such as the critical review, the academic essay, and the creative screenplay. Weekly film screenings of feature-films will inform in-class discussions, required readings, and writing assignments. Credits: 1
