CNX 136 - Remember Me: Commemoration and Culture

Description
From small-scale commemorations of everyday individuals through birthdays and funerals to more extensive commemorations of famous people, events, and places, commemoration surrounds us. Commemoration can be a barely noticed aspect of everyday life or at the forefront of cultural debates as we decide who and what to commemorate as a society. It can appear in many ways, including, but not limited to, rituals, films, monuments, literature, and even event re-enactments. In this course, we will critically analyze how and why we choose to commemorate and what sociocultural role commemoration serves. Students will engage with the acts of commemoration themselves alongside interdisciplinary analytical and theoretical texts. Through engaging with this topic, students will develop essential writing, critical thinking, and discussion skills.
