CNX 111 - Civil Wars Description Over the past fifteen years, calls for civil war in the United States from politicians, pundits, and online influencers have become more frequent and alarming. While such rhetoric may be dismissed as fringe, it demands serious critical engagement with the historical and contemporary meanings of civil war. This course invites students to interrogate the concept of civil war through a comparative, interdisciplinary framework, examining its causes, trajectories, and aftermaths. To critically explore the concept of civil war and the possibilities for peacebuilding, students will engage with global case studies, including the American Civil War, the Irish Civil War, and the Troubles in Northern Ireland. These transnational comparisons will foster a deeper understanding of how civil wars emerge, evolve, and leave lasting impacts on national identities and political cultures. Students will develop the analytical tools necessary to understand civil conflict not only as a historical phenomenon, but as an urgent issue in today’s political landscape. Credits: 1
