CNX 106 - Africa: the Idea, the Place Description This course examines Africa as a geographical and cultural location and as a construct of symbolic significance to many people beyond the continent. It investigates Africa’s position in history and contemporary global relations. The central theme is the representation of Africa in different discourses and the relationship between these representations and actual events. Course materials are drawn from scholarly literature, visual arts, music, and news media. Students will develop skills in careful reading and evaluation of texts, and critical writing throughout the semester. Course ideas will be explored further in a research project. Credits: 1
