AFS 360 - Race and Ethnic Relations

Description
The premise of this course is that the concept of “race” operates as a socio-historically situated construction to which social, political, and legal meanings are ascribed. We will be exploring the fluidity of racial categorization systems, with special attention to the deconstruction of “whiteness” as a consistently privileged, yet socio-historically malleable, category. Our readings and discussions will span dimensions of racialization in culture, media, political discourse, social movements, education, housing, and labor force participation. We will be using a variety of media to examine topics such as racial identity development processes, the evolution of white privilege, the social construction of racialized “otherness”, and the ways in which the institutionalization of racialized ideologies has resulted in the unequal distribution of power, material resources, and opportunities in the United States. Lastly, we will explore how racial identity categories intersect with other social identity categories such as gender, socio-economic class, citizenship, religion, and sexuality. Same as SOC 360 .
