AFS 349 - Modern South Africa Description With an emphasis on the 20th century, this course explores the emergence of South Africa’s multi-racial society. Major themes include African state systems, European immigration and conquest, Africans’ individual and collective responses to white domination, and changing gender roles. Students use historical documents, film, and fiction in addition to secondary readings. Discussion is an important component of course grade. Credits: 1
