AFS 233 - African-American History Description This course traces the history of African Americans from early modern Africa and the trans-Atlantic slave trade to the close of the 20th century. The first half of the course will provide a chronological narrative of people of African descent in North America, with an emphasis on enslavement and resistance, abolition and emancipation and the civil rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s; the second half of the course will examine a number of themes central to the historical experiences of African Americans, including politics, religion, art and music.
