AFS 363 - Marginal Sexualities in the Maghreb


Description
This course will explore the cultural constructions of gender and sexuality in the Maghreb and their relationship to the concept of nation, and will focus on new spaces of identity negotiation offered by Francophone North African authors such as Tahar Ben Jelloun, Abdellah Taïa, and Fatima Daas. We will also examine concepts such as, but not limited to, masculinity, heteronormativity, desire, homosocial vs. homosexual relationships, discursive/rhetorical/subjective communities, “départenance” and heterogenous identity in the context of 20th/21st century North Africa. Same as FRN 363 /WGS 363 .
